These layers trap the contaminants in the water and then the water flows through these layers where it passes through another clean section with no contaminants present.

6. Disinfection By Chlorine Or Chloramines

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is one of the most common disinfectants used to treat drinking water. It can be made by reacting sodium chloride with chlorine at high pressure, or more commonly by electrolysis of sodium chloride at low temperatures (around 70°C).

7. Fluoridation

Fluoride is added to water to protect against tooth decay and strengthen teeth. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that occurs naturally in the earth’s crust and can be found in most drinking waters, including your home tap water.

It's also added during the manufacturing process of some bottled drinks, such as Mountain Dew or Sunkist Orange Soda (which are made with purified tap water).

8. pH Adjustment

Most water treatment systems adjust their pH by adding chemicals that make it more acidic or less acidic. Acidic substances lower the number of hydrogen ions in water and cause it to have a lower pH value than normal.

Acids also react with metal ions in pipes and pipes systems, so they can cause corrosion if not removed quickly enough before they corrode them further.
